Here’s One Way to Get a Jump-Start on 2016

By Matt Sullivan, Marketing, DAT Solutions

You may not be looking for any more loads this week, especially if you want to be home for New Year’s Eve. Consider this route for next week to start you off strong in 2016.

You can start in Buffalo, Philly or Pittsburgh, and keep moving through this triangle in a head haul direction. You should be able to find loads on these lanes, even during the slow season. If you want to go ahead and call on loads now for next week, you might not have as many choices on the load board. That means you could have some deadhead. Here’s what we found:

Let’s say you line up a load from Buffalo to Philadelphia. Loads on the return trip from Philly to Buffalo have paid an average of $1.95/mile recently, which is a pretty good rate for a backhaul. But if you’ve got the time, you could make some extra money with an extra pick on your way back to Buffalo.

One option is to take a load from Philly to Pittsburgh, which is paying $2.27/mile on average. We found a second load in Wellsburg, WV, about 50 miles away, to take you back to Buffalo. Even with the deadhead, the roundtrip would average $2.54/mile, for all miles, including the empty miles. That’s a pretty good way to start 2016.
